Proper Stretching Tips and Why They Are Important
Stretching is important. It warms up muscles, helps heal injuries and can help slow down part of the aging process. However, most people don’t stretch properly and in many cases, are actually doing more harm than good!
There are 2 easy proper stretching tips for you to remember: Form and Time.
Form: It’s important to be in the right position while stretching to reduce the potential for injury and make sure that you’re stretching the right muscles. Use a mirror to watch your form if necessary or ask your trainer, or chiropractor if you’re doing it right.
Time: How long you hold a stretch is VERY important. Most people hold a stretch for only a few seconds. That’s not enough. Muscle fibers need time to relax and lengthen so stretches should be held for at least a minute. Begin with 30 seconds or so, and gradually add more time until you reach a full minute.
Stretching helps relieve achy and sore muscles and increases your flexibility, blood and oxygen flow, range of motion and helps you to relax.
Remember to add proper stretching to your daily routine!
